Application for Internet cafe is delayed

The Alachua County Commission’s vote on a zoning application to open an Internet cafe near the corner of Newberry and Tower roads has been delayed for two weeks.

Originally scheduled to go to commissioners this coming Tuesday evening, the application will now be considered during the evening session on Sept. 27, county senior planner Jerry Brewington said.

Brewington said the delay is because the first public hearing on the county’s fiscal year 2011-12 budget is also scheduled for Tuesday evening and the budget hearing and Internet cafe are both expected to be lengthy items.

The second and final hearing on the budget also happens to be scheduled for Sept. 27.

Brewington said county officials believe most budget issues will be dealt with by then and the Sept. 27 budget discussion will be less time-consuming.

Registered nonprofit Allied Veterans of the World seeks to open the Internet cafe at 7750 W. Newberry Road, most recently a Pizza Vito. The organization states that it will sell Internet time, and customers will receive entries into electronic sweepstakes with cash prizes displayed as simulated slots games.

The group says it raises money to donate to veterans organizations.

Opponents of Internet cafes, including Sheriff Sadie Darnell, say they are thinly disguised gambling operations.

It is also unclear how much of the money the organization makes will be donated to veterans organizations. An attorney representing the group said Internal Revenue Service returns do not show donations made by the parent organization’s affiliates.

The county’s Growth Management staff has recommended approval of the application in a report focused on issues such as traffic impacts and availability of infrastructure. The county’s advisory Planning Commission has recommended denial.

Cattle auction nets Sheriff’s Office almost $10,000

Sheriff Sadie Darnell came up with some extra cash for her agency this week.

The Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday auctioned off a small cattle herd for $9,750.

The herd, made up of a bull, a calf and 17 cows, were seized by the Sheriff’s Office earlier this year. The proceeds of Wednesday’s auction will be used to cover the agency’s costs while caring for the herd, for example the feed bill and cost of veterinary care. Any remaining money will go into the agency’s general fund, officials said.

Alachua County Sheriff Sadie Darnell has filed the required paperwork to begin campaigning for a third term in office. Darnell, a Democrat, filed on Wednesday. A veteran of the Gainesville Police Department, Darnell was first elected in 2006 to finish out the term of former Sheriff Steve Oelrich, who left office to make a successful run for the Florida Senate. Darnell was subsequently re-elected in 2008. She is the second of the incumbent Alachua County constitutional officers to file paperwork required to begin a re-election campaign. Property Appraiser Ed Crapo filed the paperwork in April.
