Code of Ethics: Each employee, sworn and civilian, is expected to abide by and practice a high level of ethical, personal and professional behavior; and service delivery to the citizens of Alachua County. Their promise to do so is formalized by the taking of a Code of Ethics oath.
Community Oriented Policing Implemented:
In 2007, the method of assigning deputies to a zone was changed to a “Community Oriented” philosophy. This method keeps deputies assigned to the same geographic area as much as possible, fosters an ongoing relationship of trust and history between the citizens who live and work in the area and the assigned deputies. The traditional method rotated deputies throughout the County and lacked a sense of ownership and responsibility to any specific geographic area.
In 2009, a Community Oriented Policing (COPS) Unit was implemented within the Patrol Division to expand the COP approach. This Unit includes deputies from Patrol and those specializing in Crime Prevention, Public Housing, Sexual Offender monitoring and Gang Investigations as well as a civilian Crime Prevention Specialist. The COPS Unit has actively concentrated efforts in a SW area known as our “Mike Zone”, our highest crime zone in the County. As a result, the COPS Unit is directly supportive and involved with the Southwest Library Partnership and a resident-driven initiative, the Southwest Advocacy Group (SWAG).
